Scope and Contents

The Susan Sanderlin Collection is organized into three (3) series:

Series I: Blue Photo Album contains the photographs originally stored in the blue photo album and are sorted in their original order. These photographs are undated.

Series II: Brown Photo Album contains the photographs originally stored in the brown photo album and are sorted in their original order. These photographs are primarily undated, with the dated ones ranging from 1865-1940.

Series III: Fravel Family Materials contains letters, photographs, a newspaper clipping, and a tintype relating to the Fravel family. These materials are dated 1861-1941 and are sorted chronologically.

Biographical / Historical

The Fravel family of Woodstock owned a cabinet/furniture business, located at E. Court and Church Streets in Woodstock. The materials in this collection are from members of the Fravel family, their relatives, and their acquaintances during the post-Civil War period through the first half of the twentieth century.

George Rye, and his wife Catherine, were prominent state and local officials in Shenandoah County during the Reconstruction period.

Abstract

The Susan Sanderlin Collection includes photographs from two photo albums, letters, a newspaper clipping, and a tintype related to the Fravel family of Woodstock Virginia. Materials date to 1861-1941.

Arrangement

Photographs from the photo albums are arranged in their original order. The remaining materials are arranged chronologically, with undated items last.

Donated on March 3, 2025 by Susan Sanderlin.

Processing Information

Photographs contained within the blue and brown photo albums were removed for preservation purposes. Photographs of the albums in their original state were produced. Information about the individual photographs are in the series notes. Other objects were stored loose in a box and were processed into archival folders and boxes.
